Three or four honest suggestions per holiday. Not a top-50 list. Picked because they make sense from where you probably live, in the season the holiday falls in.

May 1 (Fri) โ€” automatic 3-day weekend. Add May 14 Ascension for a second long weekend.

  • Salzburg, Austria (1.5h drive) โ€” Spring in the Salzkammergut. Hotels still off-peak. Mozart and lakes.
  • Lake Garda, Italy (4h drive) โ€” Warmer than the Alps already. Good time before the August crowds.
  • ฤŒeskรฝ Krumlov, Czech Republic (4h drive) โ€” Half the price of Salzburg, twice as quiet in early May.
  • Lake Bled, Slovenia (4h drive) โ€” Lake water still cold but the hiking is at its peak.

๐Ÿ‡ฆ๐Ÿ‡น Epiphany long weekend from Vienna

Jan 6 (Tue) โ€” take Mon off โ†’ 4 days. Winter sports season in full swing.

  • Semmering (1h by train) โ€” Closest skiing to Vienna. No driving in snow.
  • Schladming (3h drive) โ€” Bigger ski area, popular with locals.
  • Budapest, Hungary (2.5h) โ€” Not skiing, but thermal baths in winter are unmatched. Cheaper than Austria.
  • Kranjska Gora, Slovenia (5h drive) โ€” World Cup slopes, lower prices than Austrian resorts.

๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡น Republic Day long weekend from Milan

Jun 2 (Tue) โ€” take Mon off โ†’ 4 days. Beach season just opening.

  • Cinque Terre, Liguria (3h) โ€” Before the July-August crowds. Trails just reopened.
  • Lake Como (1h) โ€” Closest escape. The lake is finally swimmable.
  • Slovenian coast / Piran (4h) โ€” Adriatic without the Croatian price tag. Quiet in early June.
  • Annecy, France (4h) โ€” Alpine lake, French food, less crowded than Lake Garda.

๐Ÿ‡ซ๐Ÿ‡ท Long May from Paris

May 1, May 8, May 14 โ€” three holidays. Take 4 days off, get 10 days free.

  • Loire Valley (2h by train) โ€” Chรขteaux without the August queues. Spring gardens.
  • San Sebastiรกn, Spain (5h by train) โ€” Basque coast, food capital of Europe, perfect early-summer weather.
  • Lisbon, Portugal (2.5h flight) โ€” Cheap flights from Paris, warm but not hot yet.
  • Brittany coast โ€” Wild Atlantic, oysters, dramatically less crowded than the Mediterranean.

๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ Memorial Day weekend from the East Coast

May 25 (Mon) โ€” automatic 3-day weekend. Unofficial start of summer.

  • Cape Cod, MA โ€” Ocean still cold, but towns are open and prices are pre-peak.
  • Asheville, NC โ€” Mountains, less humidity than the coast in late May.
  • Lake George, NY โ€” Adirondacks, family-friendly, drivable from NYC.
  • Newport, RI โ€” Historic mansions, sailing, walkable.

๐Ÿ‡ธ๐Ÿ‡ฎ May Day extended weekend from Ljubljana

Apr 27 (Mon) + May 1โ€“2 (Friโ€“Sat). With 3 days leave: 9 days off.

  • Istria, Croatia (2h drive) โ€” Pre-season prices, weather warm enough to swim by late April some years.
  • Venice & Veneto (2.5h drive) โ€” Off-season Venice, agriturismo in the countryside.
  • Dolomites, Italy (4h drive) โ€” End of ski season, beginning of hiking. Rare combination.
  • Vienna (4.5h drive) โ€” Spring in the parks, museums, and a city that actually opens for May Day (Slovenia largely shuts down).

โš ๏ธ Holiday clashes โ€” avoid these dates for business

If you're scheduling meetings, deliveries, or factory visits, these are dates when entire countries effectively close.

  • Aug 15 (Ferragosto) โ€” Italy is closed. Half the country is on the beach. Don't expect calls returned the week before or after either.
  • Aug 1 โ€” Aug 15 โ€” Most of France goes on holiday. Paris is genuinely empty.
  • Last week of December โ€” Germany, Austria, Switzerland: most companies closed completely.
  • May 1 โ€” Almost all of continental Europe. Don't ship to or from EU on this day.
  • Chinese New Year (varies, late Jan / early Feb) โ€” China's factories close for 1โ€“2 weeks. Plan supply chain accordingly.
  • Thanksgiving week (US) โ€” Last Thursday of November. Wednesday is the busiest travel day of the year. Friday is informally a holiday too.
